Two Homemade Fire Starter Ideas

We love fires. Love to lay in front of them while reading or just resting with a cup of tea. They can get expensive after a bit if you always have to buy wood and fire-starters. In an attempt to be more frugal we are  experimenting with different fire starters. We also picked up a load of free firewood and kindling from Craigslist Free.

 Bring on the fire!

Pinecone Firestarters: Christmas Cutsie
These would make a cute addition to a Christmas basket.

I followed the Tutorial at Fake it Frugal but made a few adjustments. I combined Fake It Frugal's idea with another tutorial from One Stop Candle.

From the dollar store I picked up these cute cupcake holders (snowflake sticks came in the package) and two Vanilla scented candles. I also raided my dryer for some lint just to give it extra burn time.

the snowflake sticks are just for show

Egg Carton Firestarters

The following fire starters were made from an AMAZING tutorial at Salt N Pepper. It includes videos as well as step by step pictorial directions.

This is a very economical, if not a completely free way, to make firestarters. The only thing I don't have readily on hand is left over candle wax to melt on top. Guess we're not big candle people. Thank goodness we live across the street from the dollar store! lol

in addition to dryer lint I added some dried wood chips
that had fallen off the wood border of the garden

a tree root weeded from the garden-area wraps the package

Our home is warm and toasty! And smells a bit like a vanilla candle! lol Hope these ideas encourage you to look for a Go Green way to reuse what you have on hand.

    1. The pine cones worked better because the flame reaches higher.(We put our fire starters under the grate.) The egg carton ones would work well either closer to the wood or with more kindling.

    1. That's awesome that you have so many pine cones so close! My kids and I had to hunt for some. Totally worth the effort though.

  3. What a fun idea and a great gift. Too bad I have a pellet stove. I think I might get in trouble if I throw one of those in there lol. ;)

  7. Great idea. We don't have a fireplace now, but eventually when we move we're looking for a place that has one. There's just something so comfy about enjoying the heat from your fireplace vs. cranking up the heater. I'll have to remember these as well.
