Painted Throw Pillow: Drab to FAB!

Drab to FAB!

It is amazing that upholstery fabric can be PAINTED! This project has been on my to-do list for a while, and now with a-handmade-Christmas over I can finally get to it.

Just in case the project went awry I picked a throw pillow from a curb alert. I love the pillows design, but not the color so much. It isn't currently being used, so if it gets ruined and tossed it won't be missed.

I followed the instructions from HypenInteriors by Kristy Swain. She provides an excellent step-by-step tutorial. You can also click here to see other methods of painting furniture. Thank you Kristy for creating such an awesome resource on this topic!

**Note the small paintbrush in the picture: thought it would help get in-between the ridges. Ended up switching to a 2inch brush later in the game.
The ridged front is my favorite feature of this pillow.

Using a spoon for measurement I followed the 1:1 ratio of paint to fabric medium. The only difference is that I  only used Acrylic paint, no latex paint.
This picture shows the before with paint followed by the after with the fabric medium added. Color stays the same, consistency changes.

before textile medium
after textile medium added 1:1

Then I added an equal amount of water. The final product was very watery. Spraying away I started painting the back. Here is my photo journey:

these ridges were a booger to coat evenly

forget how many coats this was...but still wasn't even

**And this is where I switched to the 2 inch brush. I probably had to do 4-5 coats to get it even. Not sure if it was because of the brush or because it was acrylic paint instead of the recommended latex.

Either way, I LOVE how it turned out.
