Sprucing up Stale Spices (yes, they do expire)

-----------------------------------------------------

While I don't usually jump on the New-Years-Home-Organization-Challenge-Bandwagon, this year is different. After four years living in the same home (a record for my adult life), the clutter is starting to verge on early-onset-hoarding. You won't find this diagnosis in any professional psych journals but I assure you its real! Most of my de-cluttering occurs during moves and now the opposite is happening. Time to purge, organize, and clean the grime out of the corners.

I hung this up last year after an internet search on the shelf life of spices. The idea was that I would slowly purge my spices over a few weeks during cooking/baking. Yeah, right. That was an idea FAIL! lol This note went ignored for 365+ days.

current look:
yes, you do see 4 containers of cinnamon
this is what lack of organization leads to: unnecessary multiples

My inspiration came from Pretty Handy Girl. Her glazed technique on her own spice rack turned out amazing! I tried to copy her color as much as possible, but used a different aging technique with stain. Click Here for Pretty Handy Girl's tutorial.

What does one use whole mustard seed for?????
And no clue what Savory is and too lazy to google it.
These and 2 others never opened in the 6 years I've had this spice rack.
That's almost embarrassing to admit, almost. But I can't be the only one who never uses all the spices that came with the spice rack, right?

Transformation:
let the kids use a hammer to help ding this up

Ta - Dah!

This isn't sealed yet because I'm toying with the idea of adding script to the top. Inspired by this pic from Pinterest (source):
Antique Victorian 1890's Tin Spices Box in by kelleystreetvintage, $72.75
When I do seal it, I'll use polycrylic.

I am quite happy with the current results!
AND, now I have a spice rack with spices/seasonings I actually use!
